You do not "need" the BBC iPlayerplugin to listen to BBC Radio live. You can use either the Internet Radio menu or add the BBC App from the Apps Gallery. These are live WMA streams.
If you have difficulty playing the WMA streams then it you nay have a a network issue as these streams are usually reliable. The BBC iPlayer plugin will give you access to past programs "Listen Again" as well as Flash/AAC format of the live streams and past programs streams. To install - use WebUI Settings/Plugins and select BBC iPlayer and then click Apply. SBS will do all the work and then prompt you to reboot SBS.
