I got there in the end. The last bit of the trouble was that I had used the URL to access the NAS admin screens which had https not http....
Now I can do everything and finally I'm happy. Especially as the music sounds so much better than it did through the TV! It did take a long time though. Key moments were: 1) finding out how to get it to connect wired - Google found that one for me.
