You can definately still install manually, but the spotify plugin assumes it can write to the directory the helper app gets installed too, so if you do this make sure this directory is writeable to by the server. If you look on the server settings information page it will show you multiple locations for plugins - unzip the file into the one which is not in Cache/InstalledPlugins.
