The "preferred player" usually only affects the applications associated
with a file name extension type.

What could cause problems if MCE has a small background process running
all the time (e.g. to initiate some time related event). It's been a
while but I remember having to disable options which started MCE at
system startup and any Quick start options. However you could check if
MCE is part of the problem by starting MCE and playing a program on the
DVB and then stop playing. Start vlc GUI, open Messages window and set
verbosity to 1 or 2. Then try to play a dvb stream. If error then
stop MCE and try vlc again - if necessary restart vlc to see if error
goes away.

Wireless is unlikely to be a problem - SBS will rebuffer first rather
then stop. If the stream from vlc was somehow backing up for some
reason then vlc will stop since the "pipe" between vlc and flac/lame is
full. In this case vlc may shut down badly - which may leave some sort
of zombie process.
