First of all, it is definetely NOT Whitebear's fault...

As you suggest, it sounds like a permissions issue. The UPnP/DLNA
mechanisms do not have any security permission controls, so in theory
they can be mis-used to bypass normal file security. Alice grants Bob
access to her files; Bob is a UPnP server; Eve asks Bob -- via UPnP
calls -- for one of Alice's files; Bob serves the file => Security
breach !!

Now it looks like WMP12 is in fact being very well behaved. (Hats off
to Microsoft!) Because in this case, Bob does share public files (via
UpnP) with Eve, but he blocks sharing Alice's private files with Eve.

Conclusion: try moving the files on your laptop from Alice's folder to
"Public". Or try changing the permissions on Alice's folder to "Share /
Everybody" (you have been warned!). Alternatively look into Windows
settings for "Sharing my Music" and/or WMPs settings for "Sharing my
Music"...
