I am now on 7.6.1 - r33048, and ran a full scan (11 minutes - getting quicker) and then (manually) a custom scan.
The custom scan is now much quicker - around 1 hour for my 14,500 tracks (with 4 new tags). I can live quite happily with not playing anything for this time, provided I can control when it happens, which I can.
