I have now again restarted the squeezebox server and added username and
password. This time I noted in the buttom of the page:

devices with non PC based processors as the Spotify software library used is
only available for these processors.

So this is probably why it does not work: The QNAP TS-119 NAS has an
ARM CPU :-(
