The helper app port number was originally set to 9005, I've tried changing it several times, doing numerous restarts and retyping of the password inbetween. Today I tried changing it to 9001, 9090, 9100, 9008, 9004, 9010,9006 and then finally back to 9005. I got "connect timed out: bad file descriptor" at all of those, except at 9090, when it said Error reading headers: Bad response status line: 'GET %2Ftoplist.json%3Fq%3Dtracks%26r%3Duser HTTP%2F1.0' at /Net/HTTP/Methods.pm line 311. ...propagated at /Net/HTTP/NB.pm line 32. whatever that means. I hope today's server log can shed some light on the mystery - here it is.
