Logitech Media Server is implemented using perl, it will use a bit of
resources during initial scanning but after it has scanned your library
it shouldn't slowdown a decent computer at all. If you are running it on
a very old computer with very little memory, the situation will of
course be different.

If you just want a remote sound card to be able to play any sound, like
games, sound effects and other stuff, I don't think Squeezebox is the
right choice for you. I'm pretty sure it can be setup to work but I'm
also pretty sure there are better options if all you want is a remote
sound card.
However, if you are mainly interested in listening to music it might be
worth consider using Logitech Media Server together with one of the
software players I mentioned in my previous post.
