Static means static and it really doesn't matter if it is in the
router's DHCP range.

I've had this happen when for one reason or another, the VB is not
operating on eth0.

The VB software is "off the ranch" when it's not dealing with eth0. To
check this, log into the console and 

ifconfig

If the command shows an eth other than eth0, bingo !
