Well, you have to see that scrolling, especially through albums, is
quite a bit of work for the little iPad. That thing probably has more
pixels than your computer screen (4 times as many as an iPad 2) and if
you scroll through albums it keeps shoveling them around and bringing up
and rendering new artwork all the time. Text is not much better, it's
still the same amount of pixels. It's a _lot_ of graphics activity.
And that's all being handled by a small, 0,5" thick packet without a fan
that lasts for 10h!
iPad 3 is really a technological marvel.

Try scrolling through huge web pages or the App Store or iTunes in a
similar manner for a while and you'll see that it gets just as warm.
