A simple approach would be to use the existing "Artwork Folder" setting and just check for %ARTIST.[png|jpg] there. It would limit it to one picture per artist, but would reduce the complexity significantly.
Wow... what a shame I'm always forgetting about all the options we already have in place! I'll definitely look into this.
As this would mostly be used of the browse artists case, only one picture is good enough. You can still get more from the context menu.
