Is there any way for an app to catch this case in case they want to have their own default icon or no icon at all for artists which doesn't have any image ?
Not by using the image handler. There's a CLI query to get the raw URL, which in this case would return nothing ("musicartistinfo artistphoto artist:abba" or "...artist_id:123").
