As so often happens, the problem disappears after posting about it. I have just been listening to a Listen Again programme for two hours, with only a couple of very short drops.
The problem could have been with my internet connection, but I have a feeling that it was somewhere else, that something is going on that clears up after the SB has been on (not standby) for an hour or so. And that this has to work itself through again after each time I turn the computer on.
