I suspect it was that sort of awkwardness that led me down the 'pipe through cat' route. Too long ago to remember, though. Reading the perl manual indicates that 'use sigtrap' includes PIPE by default. It also threatens a stack trace and attempted core dump. But I can't see how that can happen after the 'exec'.
