Hurrah. That worked, for both Boom and Classic. Thank you.

So that is the solution for a clean 14.04 install with 7.7.5 on it. To
re-iterate in more detail for those who need to go the same way the
steps I had to follow were:

- Download the latest 7.9 tarball, specifically "Logitech Media
Server: Unix Tarball (for Perl 5.8-5.18, i386, x86_64, i386 FreeBSD,
  ARM EABI, PowerPC)" from
  http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.9 and unpack that
  somewhere. Then look in
  /usr/local/src/logitechmediaserver-7.9.0--NNN-/Bin/x86_64-linux (where
-XXX- is the current point release) for *faad*.
- Go to
  https://github.com/Logitech/slimserver/tree/public/7.9/Bin/x86_64-linux
  and download *flac* from there.
- In /usr/share/squeezeboxserver/Bin/i386-linux in your LMS install
rename *flac* and *faad* out of the way and replace them with the two
files you've downloaded making sure the new files have the same
  permissions.
- Restart the server.
- Play something on your Boom and _smile_!
