OK, it turns out that not only are they both there but the faad in the
git is binary identical (a 'cmp' reveals ;)) so that simplifies matters.

So the steps now are:

  
- Go to
  https://github.com/Logitech/slimserver/tree/public/7.9/Bin/x86_64-linux
  and download *flac* and *faad* from there.
- In /usr/share/squeezeboxserver/Bin/i386-linux in your LMS install
  rename *flac* and *faad* out of the way and replace them with the two
  files you've downloaded making sure the new files have the same
  permissions.
- Restart the server.
- Play something on your Boom and _smile_!
