On your Azure server is player.source always set to ERROR ?

I am more convinced that the socketwrapper timer is part of the
problem.

The timer is set up to watch for a stalled stream. In normal operation
the timer is nominally set to 6 second. If player.source is set to INFO
or DEBUG then it is reduced to 1 sec - in reality the timeout doesn't
expire after one sec but it is significant reduced. I think I've
managed to reproduce this problem on a Windows system but only when I
set player.source to INFO or DEBUG.
