Surely there is a difference between "going into the background" when you have selected a song to listen to and then gone on to do other things on the mobile, pending the need to select another song, and "going into the background" when no music is currently being played and the connected player is just quiescent? The former is not a case of "nothing to do". Perhaps there could be some logic that left the app "on" and pointed to the last selected player, until some period of inactivity on the app had passed. The default for this quiescent period should be longer than the standard album length.
I think this would be particularly useful when the mobile is being used as the player, as in SB Player. If you are listening via the mobile, you are probably doing something else on it as well, and it's just very annoying to have to navigate through the menus to get back to SB Player when the playlist ends. I appreciate the battery-saving feature of the current arrangement, and the fact that you can choose to leave it running in the background, thereby avoiding the problem, but don't think that this is always the user-friendly way. As to the point of a default player, of course that is a good thing to have, but using a different player from time to time is the norm, and not outlier-behavior. R.
