Actually I don't really have a good idea here.
My guess is it's related to the data rates or something, are you using
HD files? 
But then the &S should really be more powerful here.
You are not using iOS 6 on he 5S (iOS 7 and newer require much more
resources).

As to iPeng directly drawing power I don't think there should be a big
difference and if then newer versions would draw more because they are
built on the iOS 7/8/9 runtime which is slower than the old ones.

You are not transcoding the stream to one of the devices?
