Yes, I actually found that thread, so I have only tried it from
within xorg.

Ok, that is encouraging, that should mean that most things actually do work, 
except the nvidia driver. It has a "Nvidia Quadro NVS 160M" which seems to be a 
pretty new one. Is there any newer version of the nvidia driver around 
somewhere that one could try?
