Could also be caused by some gnome desktop application.

Are there any desktop applets running that update the 
screen frequently?  E.g. a clock applet, showing seconds?
Or the network monitor applet?  Or maybe the blinking
cursor in a gnome terminal?

And it seems there are some gnome desktop bugs, that
cause high cpu usage, like this one:
