Subject: Re: [pm-discuss] power use on b155

CPUs on a totally idle Nehalem should be in C3 about 98%
to 99% of the time; they were in earlier builds.
PowerTop shows this system's CPUs are busy 17.5% of the time,
so this system is not "idle". Additionally CPUs are in
the less power-saving C1 state 38.2% of the time. This
C1 number makes sense given the number of wakeups and
the time shown in the C0 busy state.

The power increase is coming from the high CPU usage.

IIRC this amount of wakeups is really high?
Wakeups-from-idle per second: 139250.4 interval: 5.0s
What was this on earlier Powertop?

PowerTop's wakeup numbers add up to only ~33%, so the
CPU hog is probably some of the other 66% that is not
listed in this PowerTop output. Another utility
such as top(1) might catch the offender.

As Dana and others pointed out, the additional CPU
utilization is likely to be some new device attached
to the system or a power regression in a device driver.
Are there any new USB devices attached?

Another thing to try is to disable Gnome to check quickly
if there was a desktop power regression.

Bill

Subject: [pm-discuss] power use on b155

Ever since upgrading from b154 to b155 my power meter shows
the average power use for an idle desktop to be about 20W higher and
the power level jumps around quite a bit with swings as high
as an additional 50W. Any known causes? Typical PowerTOP output:
