Thanks Peter and Simon.
Peter, I'll work on cleaning up the url later. That doesn't seem to be my problem now.
Let me try to be more clear.
Simon, I've reviewed your references and the instructions.
But something is still wrong.
I changed my main directory from "pmwiki" to "public_html."
When I point to http://charternetwork.org/public_html/pmwiki.php, I get "Charter for Compassion Network|Main/HomePage - Mozilla Firefox" in the title bar. So that seems right.
But when I edit that page, I'm not prompted for a password, and I expected to have to use the default 'admin.'
When I edited the title page line to read "$WikiTitle = 'Test';" and uploaded it, it made no difference
And when I edited the logo line to read "# $PageLogoUrl = "";" I expected the PMWiki logo to disappear, but it did not.
I believe my server, freeinternet.org, uses Apache., but http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_dir.html#directoryindex is Greek to me.
Any further ideas?

Thanks,
Wade

Your website uses a web server (such as http://httpd.apache.org/ or http://www.iis.net/ )
This server executes the PmWiki scripts, and determines which file in a directory it reads by default. This default needs to be set to pmwiki.php, see http://www.iis.net/ConfigReference/system.webServer/defaultDocument or http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_dir.html#directoryindex )

This may help

cheers

I use Firefox. Don't know how to check if it is set up to use pmwiki.php.

Are you using apache, iis, or what?
Check your browser is set up to use pmwiki.php first (rather than index.html, default.htm etc)

I unpacked the zip file to my hard drive to C:\Users\Wade\Documents\My
Webs\Charter\pmwiki\
The sub-directories are cookbook, docs, local, pub, scripts, wikilib,d.
On root is pmwiki.phy and readme.txt.
I created on my server a pmwiki folder, with the same sub-folders as above.
On the server, I moved the sample-config.php file to the local directory
and renamed it config.php.
I downloaded it to the local directory and reconfigured it.
I uploaded it to the local directory.
But when I go to http://charternetwork.org/local/pmwiki.php,
http://charternetwork.org/pmwiki.php, or
http://charternetwork.org/index.html, I get the 404 Not Found error.

When I go to http://charternetwork.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php, I get Main
/HomePage Welcome to PmWiki!

I downloaded my config.php file to a test folder to make sure that it is
the reconfigured file, and it is.

What did I do wrong? Or what should I do?

Thanks,
Wade
