(I'm new to the POE list, but I work with CVS on a daily basis)

You might want to check the permissons of the device nodes on the machine
you are trying to checkout from (mainly /dev/tty), as CVS seems to do some
some checks against them.  If you do not have write permission on /dev/tty,
than cvs checkout will fail with this error.

Other than that, you might want to doublecheck your CVSROOT string again.
