I'm not sure if SVN improves much in terms of merges... much of that is future plans, but I could be wrong. AFAIC, the major advantages are firewalls, and atomic commits. In terms of data corruption, I'm pretty relaxed that the risk is low, but that's only an opinion. Tracking merges with tags using CVS is a PITA.
