"I am perfectly aware that you are her mother," Derek snapped.  "That's a
fact you make me a habit of pointing out on a regular basis.  Do not presume
to analyze me doctor, particularly when you are in such a state."

Derek's heart was pounding pretty hard in his chest and head, which was
aching slightly, when Rachel's beeper went off.  His eyes felt as though
they were full of sand. "I won't keep you from your patience," Derek told
her.  "I wasn't going to keep you from anyplace.  The gates were locked
because I didn't want you venturing out on your own.  No one bothered to
inform me that you and Nick were leaving and frankly based on what I heard
Nick hasn't been out drinking milkshakes all night!"  He glanced at the
younger man, "how much did you drink before your....incident?"
