He shifted in his seat, clasping his hands between his knees and leaning
forward slightly.

"Perhaps," he started, "that has something to do with the fact that I am in
love."  He took another breath.  "Julia and I have been seeing one another
since shortly after she returned."

Ahh, so it was that kind of talk, Barbara thought as she set her tea down
and gave him her full attention.  She had suspected the woman.. Megan?..
that her claim to being a 'friend' was a bit off.

She smiled at the news her son gave her though.  What mother wouldn't feel
the kind of happiness that came when their only son said those four words.

"She seems very nice, Derek, and witty." she said, looking at him for a
moment before asking with quiet curiosity "But why do I get the impression
there's more to it than that?  You're almost on pins and needles."

"And where did she return from?  Another House?"
