Dogme 95 is at this point either an exquisite joke or a
played-out farce, depending on your point of view. I think
most of the participating directors have lukewarm commitments
at best. No matter how many people say it (ahem, Roger Ebert),
"Dancer In The Dark", the Bj�rk/Deneuve musical Palme d'Or
winning film, is *not* Dogme compliant. Did anyone see Bj�rk
accepting her award? Luc Besson embarassed himself, but she
was charming.
To Jeff Bobish, if you didn't like "Gummo", it's extremely
unlikely you'll like "Julien Donkey-Boy". Whether or not you
like "Kids" is probably not too relevant, since he only
wrote that one. I thought "Julien Donkey-Boy" was quite
beautiful. And if you look really hard you can catch Will
Oldham during the cigarette-eating scene.
Films like "Julien Donkey-Boy" and "Lovers" (in English, but
produced in France, directed by Jean-Marc Barr and starring
�lodie Bouchez) are Dogme-certified, meaning they display the
certificate at the beginning of the film, but I guess they're
not "official" Dogme 95 films. I still don't understand how
they did the sound on "Julien Donkey-Boy" without breaking
the rules, they must have fed the sound directly to the camera
while filming. The other American title I've heard of was
a film by Paul Morrissey (of Warhol fame), but so far, besides
the first three and the two "associated" films, there hasn't
been anything else other than "The King Is Alive" at Cannes
this year.
I've come to regard the Dogme films as "squirmish cinema",
very good at producing situations that are extremely
difficult to watch. Of course you know "The Celebration",
the ending of "The Idiots" is perhaps one of my most uncomfortable
cinematic moments. When we showed this here in San Diego
last year, people laughed at the end, which greatly disturbed
me. I was extremely disappointed with "Mifune", though it
seems to be proof that one can still make a classical narrative
film under the vow of chastity.
