The *this* that I'd very much recommend, is to QP-encode the (GECOS)
display name per RFC2047, rather than attempt the still far from
widely interoperable SMTPUTF8, and risk years of breakage.

This of course assuming the GECOS is both non-ascii and valid UTF-8.
This is exactly what I had in mind when writing my initial message.
