Yes, this is my own domain, which does *not* have google.com or
gmail.com in the domain name and certainly *does* use google MX.

I'm sorry. But I thought the question was about users who were using the google domains, not yours or mine. You're right. The solution to get pass the google domain configuration might not work for the other domains.
