Maybe you wanted to distinguish the blank "char" box from
the clear "check" box ...
I noticed this when I transited from 3.8.19 to 3.8.20
with clearing the "check" box of the escape char.
The hex value was "00" and remained so until I visited
the "Characters" tab in 3.8.20.

Yup, neither "00" nor "01" cuased any problems.
I may set it to "00" manually in the hex editor ...
