I don't know if it's related or not, have you tried to uncheck "Key/Mouse -> Setup -> Reset hot keys for non-English ..." in GUI? (I guessed you checked it) Anyway, if you choose the standard configuration, the escape char is always ASCII code "5C" (in hex number) which is usually displayed as "\". It seems that in your case the vkcode "5C" (which is usually mapped to the ASCII code "5C" (< "80"), I think) is mapped to the other (extended) ASCII code by sort of modification switch or whatever, but it's just my (pure) speculation.
