Not sure what is the most general approach needed to handle any case, eg what happens if someone embeds a picture and and excel sheet in Word, and copies all that plus some formatted text to the clipboard? How do the industrial-strength clipboard history packages handle that?
Since I'm clueless when it comes to clipboard functions, having tried it before, I did find an open-source project, in C++, that you might want to look in during your free time to see how someone else handles it.
