There is a patch against -hrt{6,7} to enable HPET on VT8237 and VT8235 at
http://os.inf.tu-dresden.de/~us15/via-hpet.patch

Please give it a spin and report if it works for you, especially if you are
using a VT8235 southbridge.

Works for me on an ASUS A7V600 VT8237.
