I would have found an active matrix colour display as well, even
before the daughtercard and the hard drive.
Don't know about the clock chipping, but keep us informed, as I
just might do that with the 5xx parts I have left from rebuilding a bunch
of 540c's.

I agree about the active matrix display ... that would be first priority for
me.
A new PRAM should also be first priority. A good PRAM battery will read more
than 3 volts on both cells, for a total of over 6 volts. A nearly dead PRAM
battery will read 2.44 to 2.52 volts per cell, for a total of about 4.96
volts. A completely dead PRAM battery will read zero.
I don't know what the limit on the cells is, but I have one machine which
would not keep time properly and the cell voltage was very close to, but
below 3 volts, each.
I strongly suspect this is a case where Apple should have gone to 3.6 volt
cells, as they did when they transitioned from the Plus line to the SE line.
Consequently, if the cells don't read more than 3 volts, each, I replace the
PRAM battery.
Be very careful when routing the wiring from the PRAM battery to the mouse
subassembly. It is very easy to get the wiring pinched between the various
plastic parts.
The consequence is the ABS plastic part is damaged and your top housing is
toast. Been there, done that. A repair is possible, but it takes a special
ABS-friendly liquid plastic cement.
E-mail me if you need info on ABS repairs on 5xx machines. I've done quite a
few.
The other components are all completely interchangeable within 520, 520c, 540
and 540c machines.
IOW, a 520 becomes a 540 simply by installing a 33/66 MHz CPU daughter card
for the 25/50 MHz card.
To convert a 520c to a 540c requires both the 33/66 MHz CPU and the display.
A "hybrid" machine, consisting of the 520c's original display and the 33/66
MHz CPU is OK, too.
Be careful with the modem's software. The upgrade to 2.5.5 to fix bugs and to
support the PPC Upgrade Card is available on-line, but the required base
software, 2.5, is not available on-line.
And GV's successor, Zoom no longer sells the base code as it was apparently
lost during the transition from GV to Boca to Zoom.
