But I _think_ the last System rev to need enablers was 7.3 ish or so.

As I recall, it was 7.6 which introduced the enabler-less system, therefore
7.5 and its variants would be the last to requirer machine-specific enablers,
and the 540c's 7.5.3 would be but one example of one of these.
8.1 will run on any '040 Quadra I've tried, and 8.5.1 will run on a
PPC-equipped 540c, with a little help from I Wish I Were.
8.5.1 will also run on '040 Quadras with the Apple or Daystar PPC upgrade
card, using the same technique. The Daystar card uses the same LSI chips and
ROM chips as does the Apple card (same Apple part numbers), but the chip
layout is a different (it is backward from the Apple card).
Sonnet claims their reissue of the Daystar card can run 8.6 without any
special help other than their proprietary enabler.
The Sonnet enabler won't let an Apple PPC upgrade card run 8.5.1, so I guess
Sonnet is checking for the earlier PPC upgrade cards (even Daystar's, which
Sonnet took over) and is rejecting them.
Given that, it is likely that Sonnet's enabler would similarly reject the PPC
upgrade card in the 540c.
