Assuming the the 1400 use the same keyboard connector as the 5300 and PBG3...

Do you know that the keyboard connector doesn't simply plug into the socket
on the board.  There is a plastic "sleeve", for lack of a better term, that
must be pulled outward about a tenth of an inch to release the cable.  To
reinsert the cable that sleeve must be pulled out, holding it out helps,
then the ribbon cable inserted and finally the sleeve pushed in.  If you
just try to force the ribbon cable in it probably won't make contact.
