A programmer friend of mine reccomended Dell computers to others and then
actually bought a desktop Dell. He had problems installing his own software,
then had so many problems that the Dell tech support told him to reformat the
hard and he never got the drive working again. He lost a lot of included
bonus software and it took several tries and more than a month to get a good
drive. Finally a buddy that does tech support at his office got it running.
The school I work at ordered some Dells [& lots of Macs ;) ] We were told a
twenty percent DOA (Dead on Arrival) was acceptable by the tech support.
So anyway this same friend has bought a few laptops from winbooks.com. He
said that they regularly have "great deals" on refurbished laptops once a
month. He always erased Windows 98 and installed windows95 instead. They
are still used except for the one that accidently got stepped on.
Personally, I use Virtual PC and it seems just as fast as my Mac OS.
good luck,
Tony
