Some time ago my 170 developed major problems, but I had to put it aside as
I got ready for the new school year. However, I sorely miss using my
laptop,and also want to salvage files from it if possible. Based on tips
from several folks and other information on the web, I think I've got a
blown fuse, probably caused by my power adaptor. I have a M 5140 model
adaptor, and it was tagged as a culprit for shorting out fuses because of
some problem with insulation in the plug. I was pointed to a site that
showed how to replace the fuse, but it entails soldering, and I've never
soldered anything.
1. Would it be worthwhile and/or reasonably cost efficient to pay someone
else to replace the fuse?
2. Or am I better off buying another 170 from ebay and swapping my RAM and
hard drive into it?
3. As for the power adaptor...are there good replacements available that
won't short out fuses?
4. Is soldering something best left to an experienced electronics person?
I am getting braver about opening up older powerbooks and PowerMacs, but
don't want get too far ahead of my own learning curve. Thanks again. I've
certainly learned quite a bit from this list, and I'm not afraid of
learning more stuff.
