Forgot all about that (and how many times have I told people that >in answer to 'Why won't my CD player play music on my (non-soundcard >equipped) PC?..;-) > >Actually the Reno serves quite well as a CD player...that's the duty >mine pulled for a couple of years on my desk at work...just plug >headphones or amplified speakers into the headphone jack on it. Although, strangely, it works with some CDRWs. For years, I went around telling people there was no audio playthrough on the 500/190/5300 - but there is. Audio signals can be transmitted via the SCSI, provided the CD device supports this. In this instance, I'm talking about a Yamaha CDRW here. Most (all?) CDRWs come with audio connectors for PC sound cards, but this is unnecessary with Macs. The 5300/190 speakers don't sound good, but at least they work.
