A general rule of thumb when it comes to buying computers: always buy as 
much as you can possibly afford. The system will be new (or newish) 
capable enough to still work with mainstream apps, and have the longest 
useful lifespan.

Looking at $800-$1000 You can get quite a bit for that much, a newer 
used G3 Powerbook or used iBook.

Likely you will be most satisfied with the G3 powerbook, it's got a 
larger screen and more expansion capability.
