There has been talk of fax-over-IP, but I don't know if anything ever became of it. That said, since fax machines are connected to phone lines, at some point the fax you're sending has to go over a phone line to reach the recipient's fax machine. And that said, at least you don't lose your Internet connection while faxing when you're on broadband....
