I'm not sure about cross-platform, but the best lighter weight writing program is called -- Writer. It's freeware available at versiontracker and is just right when you don't want to crank up Word. I use it for smaller documents that don't need much formatting and for archiving my Entourage emails. It is basically a feature-richer version of SimpleText that also doesn't have SimpleText's file limits.
