The only thing I can think of would be the Power
Manager.  Have you tried reseting the Power Manager? 
You can usually accomplish this by shutting down the
machine, unplugging the ac adapter from the back,
taking the battery out, and holding in the reset
button for one minute.  Then plug your AC adapter back
in and fire it up...  I usually put the battery back
in after the machine is running.  Supposedly, zapping
the PRAM will also reset the Power Manager, but I
haven't had as much luck with that method on my
3400...

Check your PRAM battery to make sure it isn't weak. 
I've seen weak PRAM batteries cause all kinds of
strange things to occur.
