If you're using a 1400, the PRAM battery is just under your right wrist. Removing/replacing it means separating the lower half. You have to remove the battery, floppy/cd, display, unplug the trackpad, and take out about a dozen screws (including the two in the back covered with stickers). Then you can remove the aluminum shield that holds the battery in place and unplug the old one. Snake the plug through a too-small opening, do the reverse with the new battery, and you're set. FWIW, I have a similar problem with my 1400 and a new battery didn't solve it. I did however get a good education in disassembly.
