It sounds like you do not have File Exchange (or the older PC 
Exchange) active on the laptop.  This is the tool you need on a Mac 
to see a Compact Flash formatted for use with the camera.  The CF 
card needs to be formatted for DOS in order for the camera to see it 
and the best bet is to format it in the Camera.

I don't recall if this applies to Compact Flash but I found that for 
my SmartMedia card I needed to insert it in the adapter and then 
insert the adapter in the laptop.  If I do it the other way the 
system never sees it and I can't eject the adapter either.  I have to 
shutdown and use the external button to eject the card.
