why should he try again? :) FWIW: I have success reading my Sandisk 64 meg card when it's in DOS mode, or formatted by my Olympus camera, on my 1400/8.6. I can, however, only put 1400 or so items on it when it's formatted as DOS, not as Mac, I guess a limitation of the PC Exchange? or DOS system or whatever. (I was putting my system folder on it just to see what would happen). Perhaps reinstall PC/File Exchange (I forget when the name changed) and the other items (foreign filesystems extensions, etc- although perhaps most of those deal only with CD format types). So, maybe delete your PC/File Exchange prefs, reinstall that part of the OS, whatever makes sense to you along those lines. If you have a PC laptop, format the card there and use utils to check the integrity of the flash card, could have a bad block or something. I've successfully mapped out bad portions of a linear flash card using the manufacturers utils for DOS. I assume some utils of that sort exist for CF, but have not looked.
