I'm booting a 1400 from CF with 8.1 just fine; Sandisk 64 meg w/ Sandisk PC
Card adapter. The goal was same as yours- get a Speed disk boot disk made
so I could defragment files.

I had to format it as a mac volume is all, then just drug the system folder
from the hard drive over (actually I only drug over the extensions and
cdevs actually needed, since 64 megs would not be enough for entire system
folder plus Norton Utils, I had to trim stuff that wasn't needed for
Norton, plus make sure I had "startup disk" and similar stuff that I would
need).

If you installed from a CD, try just dragging a copy of your current system
folder over, then choosing the PC Card with the "startup disk" control
panel.

and of course after I did all this, I got one of the IBM 20gig fluid
spindle drives on clearance from OWC and thus made the defrag I did on the
old drive moot :) but I will say- the fluid spindle HD's are just about as
quiet as booting from a PC Card!
