OK, I just booted the 5300ce from its internal HD, moved the PC Card that
boots the 1400 fine into the 5300, chose the PC Card volume in the startup
disk control panel. Restart from pulldown menu.

First two boots, I got a bus error after the MacOS8 splash window first
appears. 3rd boot, it boots fine from the CF.

Select startup disk to be the HD again, first boot, bus error, click
restart, boots fine from the HD the second time.

Switching back to PC Card, first boot: illegal instruction; second boot:
bus error; 3rd boot- fine.

Switching back from PC Card to HD, this time choosing "restart" then
hitting the reset button on the back of the PB as well while the screen is
still blanked, it still takes a few tries before a successful boot from the
HD.

So perhaps try a couple more times, It seems something persists (in PRAM?)
that confuses things. I didn't zap the PRAM as I seem to recall losing my
startup disk selection on desktops when I did that and had multiple system
volumes possible (but powerbooks seem to break rules, or at least have a
different set- don't even get me started on powerbook SCSI!).

I can switch back and forth between HD and Pc Card boot volume without the
errors on the 1400cs.
This could be an artifact of using a boot folder from a 1400 to boot the
5300cs, but given your experience, perhaps not.
